As most of you know, I leave Tuesday morning for 10 days in Israel, so I wanted to make sure I posted before I left.
Over the winter break, there are two assignments, both made at least two weeks ago.
First, there's the Social Studies project. See your email for that one.
Second, there is a science packet of 4 or 5 experiments having to do with Force, Motion, etc. We are on Chapter 13 in our Science books. The assigment is to do at least two of the experiments at home, paste the directions into the science notebook, and write up the results.
Both assignments are due the day we return from vacation, which might be Wednesday, January 5.
Have a wonderful vacation!

Thanksgiving Presentations
Each child has been assigned a famous early explorer, mostly from the late 16th Century. I've asked the children to develop a 3-4 minute talk in the first person to introduce the idea of Thanksgiving Day to the rest of the schools. Children may come in costume if they wish. Presentations will be around lunch time, but I don't know the exact time. Anyone with a camcorder is welcome to come and record. It should be fun!

Dear Students and Parents,
Our students took a quiz on nouns recently, Unit 2 in grammar. Their tests are glued into their blue language notebooks. While they did well on the end of the unit test, there were some aspects that need review work.
Each student has an individually created packet of “Extra Practice” pages that are part if the text package we are using. There is a brief explanation of the skill being reinforced at the top of the page, followed by a series of exercises. The exercises begin with the basic idea in simplistic form (the circle exercises), followed by the average use of the skill (the triangle exercises), and ending with application of the skill (the square exercises).
I would like the parents to review each skill with your child and work through the circle and triangle exercises together. Please have the students do the square sections of each worksheet along. Most of the time this practice can be done directly on the paper. The students will need to return the completed work no later than Monday, October 11, 2010.
Thank you for your help in reinforcing these important grammar skills with your child.

More on the European Explorers
I've just found a great web site from Canada with wonderful pictures and information on the European Exploration of North and South Americas. The language may be a little tough for our students, but the graphics and general ideas are wonderful. The site includes a wonderful inner slide show of the various winds that the explorers had to deal with through out the world. Enjoy!

Tomorrow Night -- Sukkot!
More holidays! only two more weeks to go, and then life will be semi normal.
4th grade math test will be Wednesday, 9/22. Heads Up -- there will be a social studies test coming up as well as a science test. Also, Social Studies notebooks and Science notebooks will be collected and graded. We're closing out the second unit in Language as well. Everything always seems to dovetail at about the same time.
Next week, on Tuesday, I would like the kids to come over to my house for a very informal luncheon in our sukkah. I'll try to have the permission slip sent home tomorrow, and I will definitely need drivers. Thanks!

Shana Tova!
I hope everyone has had a great holiday weekend. Personally, I'm shulled out, but then, Friday is another day.
I'm looking over my lesson plans, and have realized the month of September is going to be really sketchy. We'll fit in what we can, and after Sukkot we'll settle down to some regular scheduling. In the mean time, this coming week I want to work toward a spelling test on Thursday with Group D covering Sort 3 and Group E on Sort 2. There will also be a social studies test on Monday, I hope, and 5th grade will finish the reteaching of Chapter 1 in math. We'll be doing some experiments in science, and Mr. Roy will definitely come to school on Wednesday.
See everyone on Monday! I'm looking forward to a perfect attendance day, so I can enjoy all of you!

Labor Day Weekend Homework
Your children have a few things to do this weekend.
First, they need to have their writing about "What bugs me" in typed format. Please send me the paper as an attachment so that we can work with these here at school.
Social Studies -- there is a chart reviewing all the tribes we have read about in this unit of Chapters 5 through 12. The children should complete this chart and the map of the Natives for Tuesday.
All the children need to practice their math facts. They should have taken their calculators home, and they know of two games on the calculator they can play to learn their multiplication facts.
Have a wonderful weekend! I will see everyone Tuesday.

Labor Day Weekend is Coming!
We're almost up to the long weekend. I'm trying to get the 5th grade ready for a math test on Chapter 1 on Friday. Everyone will have a spelling test on Friday, so expect some homework in Spelling tomorrow night.
Mr. Roy has been wonderful in science. Ask your children what they learned today. They had a lot of fun.

After Two Weeks of School
Just wanted you to know that we have taken our first tests! The children did wonderfully on their spelling tests and the 4th grade did really well on the first math test. Fifth graders will have their first math test sometime next week.
By the way, all of our books are now here! Halleluya!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. I'll see all the children on Monday!
