Class Updates!

Recently I sent home a file folder with science Chapter 1 test and science notebook papers. I also sent home the math Chapter 1 packet, including the chapter test and the work from that chapter. Please note the section where the children had to analyze their mistakes in the math. We are currently working on Chapter 2 in Science, cells and cell systems. Math we are working on multiplication and division. Social Studies will be moving toward the Civil War, most likely next week.

Math Homework this weekend

We had a couple of slow moments in math today. Three of the 5th graders have a small amount of homework for the weekend -- basically, shouldn't take more than 10-20 minutes. Please let your child do his/her do the work alone :) Thanks! Have a great weekend, and I'll see everyone Monday morning!

Speeches

April 12, 2011

Welcome to TCAP week. Your children are doing a great job, and we only have four more tests to complete. Thank you for making sure the children have their healthy snacks and have gotten good breakfasts and lots of sleep.
Graduation is coming up! It will be Tuesday evening, May 24, at 6:30. Fifth graders will each give a brief speech for the community.
This year we have chosen as a topic “heroes”. We have discussed what qualities make a hero, we have talked about different people we consider to be heroes, and we have researched examples of heroes. Friday last week, the children were given an assignment to decide on their hero and complete a graphic organizer to help them get their thoughts organized. This assignment was due on Monday. We will begin organizing our thoughts tomorrow.
Please help your child commit to a person by tomorrow. The hero can be modern or historic, famous or not, Jewish or not. If you have access to Internet at home, send in information about your child’s choice tomorrow. Your child’s speech will reflect reasons why the person has been chosen and what the student has learned from the hero. We will help students get their ideas and facts organized this week, so that they can work on their speeches at home over break. Speeches need to be completed by the end of Spring Vacation. This activity is to be done at home with parent help.
We will be working with Ellen Kern, a professional in our community, to help the children with their presentations. That work will begin as soon as we return from vacation.

Making Thirteen Colonies Final Project

3/10/11
We have almost finished our study of Book 2 of the Hakim series, Making Thirteen Colonies. I have asked the children to start thinking about their end-of-book projects, which will be due Monday, March 28, 2011.

I want the children to see the original thirteen colonies both as a group and as individual communities. For this reason, I want the children to focus on the total of the colonies. Ideally, I’d like to see a regular sized poster of the thirteen colonies in relation to Europe at the time. I want something that will show where the settlers came from, the religions unique to each colony and the cultures unique to each colony including living standards and economy. However, I will accept any poster that shows the group of colonies. These projects are to be done individually – no groups this time. They are also to be very simplistic. There are plenty of maps available throughout the text as well as many that can be located on the Internet. However, please have your child actually draw the maps – don’t just download and enlarge.

I will grade the posters in the following manner:
• 25 points – appearance, including details, color, readability
• 25 points – creativity in combining information to make a “picture” of the colonies
• 20 points – following directions for information included
o European origin of colonists
o religion of colonists
o living conditions of the colony
o economics of the colony
• 13 points – inclusion of each colony!
• 16 points – poster includes titles and map key

As always, I know there are some vagaries in this assignment. I want to leave some room for individuality! And, as always, any questions? Let me know!

Regards,
Mrs. O

The KJDS Science Fair

Your child should have finished all the experiments and recording of data. We discussed this in class on Friday, 2/18. The final project (display board, pictures, etc) must be in school on Friday, 2/25, when we will have our Science Fair with Guest Judges at our school. The projects sound wonderful, and I can't wait to see them!
